MATCH CENTRE: ENGLAND V WALES

If I had to sum up the game in just a few words, I would go for togetherness, hard work, resilience and fun. Wow words!

LJ’s goal just sums up LJ up. We know what LJ is about. She’s so good on the ball, she can manipulate it both ways, she can shoot with both feet. I knew as soon she cut inside and took that shot that it was going in.

The whole move starting with Hannah – Hannah’s pass was just incredible, it beat all of their players and we missed out everyone on the pitch and ended up with Less who got her first assist.

The celebration just sums LJ up – she’s the most chilled player I’ve ever played with in my life.

G deserved her goal, too. She’s worked so hard to get back to where she is now. The way she plays looks like she hasn’t had that injury and she hasn’t been out for a long time. She still grafts, she still gets stuck in for challenges, she still gets up and down the pitch.

I was buzzing to get on the scoresheet. For Less to assist a third one and it be for me is really special. I always think it’s mad because she’s my best friend and we go through so much together and then when you get on the pitch and you assist each other, not many friends can say that they do that.

After the game, I said, ‘what have you got Player of the Match for?’ And then someone said, ‘she assisted three times’ and I thought, ‘oh, fair enough’.

It was my left foot and I don’t tend to use my left foot often and Alex has been in my ear all camp telling me I need to shoot more with my left foot. She pulled me in training when we were at St. George’s Park and said, ‘you need to hit it more with your left because people only ever expect you to shoot on your right’.

I think it was the World Cup against Australia and everyone laughs at it now. I ran off and did about 45 different celebrations. I just gave it everything all in one. They were just coming out of me, all of these different celebrations and yesterday I ended up on the floor and did a bit of a starfish thing.

I remember shooting and doing a spin and landing on the floor and I thought, ‘I could just lay here for a little bit longer’. Then I thought, ‘maybe I should do a few press-ups to do a little bit of a celebration’ but I decided against it which I’m glad about now.

I always love celebrating with the players who aren’t on the pitch because I know what it means to them. So, I ran over there and that was really nice as well because we are all one team and without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do on the pitch.

It’s so nice to hear your name being shouted from the fans in the stadium. I needed to warn my family and my friends. I said, ‘just in case you hear it, they’re not booing me – it’s actually them chanting my name in a deep voice’.

The first time I heard the ‘Toone’ was EURO 2022 and I thought, ‘oh my God, they’re all booing me – what have I done wrong? They all hate me’. And someone said, ‘you do know they’re saying Toone’. Now when I hear it, it makes me laugh so much. I love it.

It's the first tournament without dad and I know it’s the first tournament for Beth without her mum, so we’re in it together. We know that they’re here with us. We talk about it all the time and we talk about them all the time. We know that they’d be so proud of us.

When I score, now I add another celebration where I point to the sky for him. I know he’ll be having a beer up there and he’ll be buzzing with that. It’s even probably harder for my family in the stands without him and I know they were all really emotional when I scored.

Mum actually brought some of dad’s ashes out and when my brother was here as well, we scattered some of his ashes into the lake and now he really is here.

The next game is massive. It’s another one that we have to win. England v Wales anyway is a massive game. It’s a rivalry. If we play like we did against Holland, it will be a really tough game for them. I think we’ve got to take a lot of positives and confidence from that game and really push it into the next one.
